Direwolves and how to base them in a fun way

With rapid progress going on I am finishing up the Hordes of Vormond, my Vampire Counts army. I bought a box of Direwolves this saturday at GameKastle in San Jose and immediately put them together and on some fun bases.
A simple piece glued to the base with some sand will do wonders once painted. I got a whole bunch of these pieces from my buddy Christian and used a lot for this unit. I still have to do greenstuff on the unit to fill some gaps and stuff but i wanted to show this anyway
These two are jumping over an old chimney which overlaps onto the next door base. I glued the chimney to the one of the right but left space open on the other one, they are connected which makes the base look more realistic
 Here they are separated
all the hounds are magnetized with a small piece of magnetic adhesive, there is tin sheet in the movement tray
and magnetic on the bottom for easy transport on a steel baking sheet
and yes, the magnets are strong but not too strong
Hope this inspires!

Cheap Zombies are no masterpieces, but they are cheap

I worked some more on the cheap squad I showed you yesterday, wanting to finish up more zombies to get ready for my next game. here's a step by step, really dirty and quick paintjob. Remember, the paintjob can be like that until the last highlight, which I haven't done yet. I have really taken painting more serious over the years, but I couldn't help doing this quickly and that in itself was fun. Here's the tutorial on how to go fast

Here's the squad, painted white and brown

A quick drybrush over the earth

Heavy wash over all of it

Now some different colors washes while all is still wet; use it sparingly! Red
 Green
 Blue
On the larger bodies you have a bit more room to work
After a bit of drying, white drybrush
Starting to look a bit better
Then a black wash around all creases of the zombies coming out of the ground
 A bit of grass
I will finish it up tomorrow

Hope this inspires! No masterpieces but good enough for FREE units: play those counts! They are super COOL

Mike

Hordes of Vormond: lots of zombies on the cheap!

I am nearing the end of my Vampire Counts Army: the Hordes of Vormond. I have been extremely busy with it, from painting and modeling to magnetizing the entire army to actually playing games with it! Wow, that last one i had never expected but I played a 1200 point game last friday and really enjoyed it.

Anyway, first a quick shot of the fridge with the new fridge magnet:

I have added magnetic adhesive strips to the bottom of each movement tray so I can transport them safely on a steel baking sheet; the strips are strong as you can see. Here's a shot from above:

Now on to the title: the cheap zombies. As you know the Counts need a lot of zombies, as valid units to block advances of the enemy but also as free add ons using the Raise Dead Spells. If you use the normal spell you get 4 plus D3 but with a 25 pt upgrade you can get 9 plus D3, maximizing at 12. So you need a lot of zombies in reserve, regardless of you starting lineup.

There are two problems with modeling a lot of zombies:
1. GW zombies haven't been updated in a long time and look really out-of-date
2. Mantic has great zombies but they come in boxes of 30 for about 30 bucks, not too cheap if you want a lot of them
So I did this: I bought one box of 30 mantic zombies and built them, making them look good like this:

Then for the Raise Dead units (i am using two necromancers and they could raise dead TWICE in one turn if you buy the upgrade of 10 points) I used Apoxie Sculpt, built up some bases, added secret SCWH sand and stuck in a hand here, an arm there, a head with hand, a torso with head etc. In 10 minutes I had 10 zombies made.

When painted they look great and this way you can build 60 of them with a limited box of bitz. Painting will go quick and the end result will look great.

Here's that one, next to some more full bodied brethern.

I hope this is handy for the many Counts players. If you don't have Apoxie Sculpt, you can use green stuff, DAS clay or Spackle...it will all work!

Heroes of Armageddon Blood Angels Army comes home

John and I were finally able to finish up our part of the Heroes of Armageddon Charity Drive. The winner of the Blood Angels army, Peter Dean, lives in Oakland and we agreed to meet halfway between Santa Cruz and Oakland: GameKastle in San Jose (the BEST game store in the Bay Area I think). Anyway, we were kindly allowed to set up the entire army and await Peter. Here is another quick overview:

Jawaballs Banner and Battlefoam Travel Case

The army

The swag with the custom templates from Galeforce Nine and the super cool dice from Bolter and Chainsword and chessex

And then Peter walked in:
Checking out more stuff..

John made a nice shirt for Peter
And here he is in front of Game Kastle:

That's it! Now it's on to Next Year's Project.....

Just letting you all know: this army was shipped from Chicago to Santa Cruz but got LOST for two weeks. We never told Peter and only with grim determination John was able to track it down, shouting down one UPS-er and wooing another...it was found but not before we lost many hours of valuable sleep...

Barter Bucket: 8/27/11

Another world, another time. In the age of wonder.

A thousand years ago this land was green, until the Bucket cracked. A single piece was lost, a shard of the Bucket. Then strife began, and people began charging for bits and single models. Here in the castle of the Bucket, Santa Cruz Warhammer took control. Now the bits flow freely once more. Now the Bucket hangs above a shaft of air and fire. Once more gamers gather at the Bucket. Once more they replenish their bits bins. The Bucket...

The Bucket has one purpose, gamers helping other gamers. It's a place to trade the stuff you have laying around, the stuff you're not using and get the stuff you do need. No more buying whole sets for just one model, no more buying overpriced single bits. This concept is kept alive by the cooperative spirit of all of us.

Make sure your email gets to me by Thursday for it to post that week, emails go to miksminis at gmail dot com. Please keep them simple and concise with details, and limit your requests for needs and haves to three items each. This will turn a shotgun effect of a huge list crossing your fingers hoping for a bite to a more streamlined surgical bits hunt. It will also keep the Bucket itself compact and efficient.

SCWH Honor Roll #26 - Conversions

Welcome to the SCWH Honor Roll now brought to you with love and care direct from Lantz and Matt!

Lamenter's - Artscale Vulkan Hestan and Super Bike
Mordian 7th's - Sabre Tank Hunter
White Metal Game's - Frost Giants "Predator"
Phil's - Custom Warhound
N++'s - WarmaHordes WoW Troll
Ten inch Template's - Completed Kabal of the Furskin Army with Display Board
Recalcitrant Daze's - Da Choppa
Dave Taylor Miniature's - Tanith First and Only (Though not Only in this case)

Lantz: Clearly in our first week as SCWH writers we'd have to come up with some pretty snazzy links here, Matt. I think we managed to pull it off. I for one have been watching the progress on WMG's Frost Giants project. Pretty unique concept. And speaking of completely unique, N++ has a mixture of two gaming worlds into one project; loving it.

Matt: I'd have to agree Lantz, those are truly some fine, top quality links! I've got to say, that Frost Giant's Predator Counts as is a very unique concept and I can't wait to see it painted! I will also be keeping a very close eye on Da Choppa as it gets painted in the next few weeks and then entered into the Golden Demon Open.

Mike and John's additions for this week's Honor roll are:

Mike: Check out this amazing diorama at Massive Voodoo. These German modelers are really amongst the most talented and daring modelers in the world!

John: Check out Teek's Ork unicycle mob

As always: if you care about your fellow bloggers and their work, please link the Honor Roll on your blog. Grab the jpg from this post and use this link underneath:

Much appreciation!

New Writers, new series!

John and I have added THREE new writers to the Santa Cruz Warhammer team AND will start TWO new series.

First of all: Glenn or Maleagant will begin a wonderful series of articles on his INSANE collection or super collectible GW gadgets, forgotten giftitems and very rare or forgotten models. Here's the title:
Glenn has been a life long gamer and collector and has so many interesting stories and items to share, it will be a trip down memory lane in a funny but cool way. You'll love it.

Next: SCJohn and Glenn are both professional fleamarket hunters and are going to write about their exploits pounding the pavement or craigslist, showing us not only the crazy deals, but also the people who sell stuff to them. The series will be called  The Hunters
Lastly The Santa Cruz Warhammer Honor Roll has TWO new writers: Matt and Lantz from Miniature Wargame Conversions have accepted to take care of the best of this week in their own, creative and fun BUT knowledgable way. Check it out this coming Friday!

Over the course over this next month we are hoping to add more writers to this blog, including a expert in new products and tourney fantasy players....if you think you have what it takes to write for us, drop us a line at scwarhammer at gmail dot com

Enjoy!

Santa Cruz Warhammer Honor Roll: where leads the road?

hey friends, I am back from camping in the high Sierras, with swimming in icy lakes and playing in the snow with our kids while having a 90 degree sun burn you....it was great. We stayed at 6700 feet and hiked up to about 8000 numerous times and we had a great time.
Back, refreshed and ready, I realized that the Santa Cruz Honor Roll is an endangered species! Rob did an amazing job for so long and the friday Honor Roll is in general the most visited day on our little blog with TONS of reader linking to it on their own blogs...
Rob had to quit and again, John and I THANK him for the wonderful job he has done. Now we need to keep it going!!

WHO wants to? 8 great links a week, 2 links from us and one great post. You can make it how you want to...

We don't want to stop it..who wants to be part of our little team?

Mike
