SCW Game Night Pics / SCW Needs You!

I am going to kick off this post with some pics from our local game night. These meetings are getting better and better.

Here are some pics of some of the guys playing Fantasy for the Warbands expansion series we are doing, its been great fun.

If you can find a good spot I highly recommend getting a group together, most of us had never really met before, and now we have a great bunch of guys all from the local area. If you don't have a store that you can play in, you can take control and do it yourself.

Santa Cruz Warhammer was started to get in touch with other local hobbyists in our small town, we have met so many cool people from right here in our own community.

Next we are reaching out to you, our readers for some help on this blog.

We have been enjoying the weekly Santa Cruz Honor Roll and we hope you have too, but our guest writer will not be able to continue with it, so we are looking for some help.

If you are a blog surfer and would like to be considered to take the torch and carry it on, please contact us for details.

Zombies painted a la Goatboy

Last Friday, at our Santa Cruz Warhammer Invitational, I had to come up with at least 7 painted zombies. The wednesday before, in a spurt of inpsiration, I modeled ten zombies, using the Mantic Zombie kit, some GW bitz and lots of Apoxie Sculpt. Thursday night I had to paint at least 7 of them and I am a terribly slow painter. So I discarded all my previous methods and went for what I call the Goatboy technique. Goatboy (from BOLS) is extremely prolific and paints unlike anyone else I know. Without wanting to sound pretentious, I feel he paints like an impressionist. He not hitting every detail, he doesn't paint super neat, instead he gives us an impression of what he thinks the model embodies. Here are some of his recent models

At first I sniggered at it, because I have come from the White Dwarf School of thought, which focuses on detail and finesse and keeping all the paint within the lines etc. But slowly I have come to admire it; it's like an artist painting something and then letting us form our own image of it. Goatboy is on to something and his background as an artist is really helping him here.
Of course there are still big decisions needed, a chaos lord embodies something different than an Ork, and the palette chosen is usally strictly tied to the role the model plays on the tabletop.

So when I had to paint my zombies in no time, I spent more time thinking about the color scheme then the paintjob itself. Here are the models:

I must have pondered for two hours how I wanted them to shine during battle, while doing dishes, putting the kids to bed, reading....if only those girls knew. Anyway, finally I figured it out and thew on a palette of whites, browns, reds and yellows.

I tried hard not to hit every detail, instead keep the big picture in mind, a group of scary forms moving and crawling, full of dirt and menace. I stopped thinking like models as individuals, instead painting them as a group.

With extra bitz and some apoxie sculpt you can add a LOT of models cheaply. This one has 3 bitz.

Here are some I still need to do

I don't think I can change my ways completely. Zombies lend themselves well to this experiment and I will apply it now whenever I feel it's effective.

Here's Goatboy's personal blog, check it out: http://goatboy40k.blogspot.com/

400 Points of Lizarmen, Warband Bolster

Well, after last months game I learned a few things.
1. Kroxigor strikes last and will not live long enough to do so.
2. Skinks are fragile, and blowguns unreliable in small numbers.
3. Saurus are pretty tough and steadfast.
4. Don't wait til the day of the game to finish my models.

So, with 200 more points to spend, I decided to ditch the Krox. and add a bunch of cheap skirmishing skinks to saturate with blowgun darts and harass. In 7 small 3 man teams (min. size in warbands) these guys should be annoying, and not worth charging.

I added 5 more Saurus to make a longer lasting block of 15.

and with the left over points added a Salamander with skink handlers, with the new flamer template rules this guy should be wicked.

well those are the boys, we shall see how they do on Friday night.

Zombies? What to do?

For my Hordes of Hormond I needed a good size squad of zombies, since the Vampire Counts can raise those troops from the ground and its fun to do. But the zombies from GW are not attractive to me, they look like old sculpts and are not very fluid or realistic.
I looked around for better models and found a great set of Mantic Zombies, 30 to a box. The sculpting is nice and detailed and the models can be positioned in many different ways. Mostly I felt that the heads were in line with the detailed sculpts of the modern day GW skeletons and ghouls.

Here's a link to the ones I got.

Let me know what you all think

Mike and John's additions for this weeks Honor roll are:

Mike: -- my link goes to one of my modeling heroes: Walter from Iron Dog Studios in San Francisco. Please take your time and go through his stuff, you will realize most of my Ork ideas are stolen from him. Enjoy!

John: My pick goes to Dave Taylor's Pre-Heresy Death Guard assault marine and Garros  I have been looking for some inspiration to get the ball rolling on a small pre-heresy Death Guard unit, and this sure fits the bill.

That finishes out this week's Honor Roll! I'd also like to mention a contest The Fallen Princes are running for the First 'Badab Veterans' Competition.  The contest ends on April 15th, so there's only a month left. If you are interested, check out the link for the full rules and details.

Game Kastle Swap Meet Haul

Saturday once again found me on my way over to the Game Kastle swap meet in San Jose.

These Swaps have always been good to me and are a fun way to support my frugal gaming approach. This time was no different and I left with a nice haul.

Built Land Raider $10. Shadowsword in shrinkwrap $40. Fantasy 8th ed. big book $20. White Dwarf 30yr mini $10. Warhammer Online exclusive Grumlok & Gazbag mini $10. and 6 OOP Rhino MkI variants for an up coming project $5. each

I also grabbed these single minis on the cheep, slayer pirate (needed one more for a unit) Gotrex with troll head, dwarf guard with hammer, and an old gobbo with a spear to use as a squig herder.

I also grabbed this box of trees to bolster the game club supply as we are doing Fantasy warbands.

Thats it, hope you all are able to find some great deals too.

Sculpting your own bases: the lazy man's way

The image above is from my squad of Ghouls in my Hordes of Vormond Army. Check out the bases.  They have little hills, a fence or shield here and there and some grass. If you like this kind of base, check out this post.
First I want to say that basing your models is about as crucial as doing a good paint job. On my Bishkek 2nd Army I went with resin bases all the way, mostly from Dragon Forge, which makes really excellent ones. But in Fantasy there is not as much choice, which is a shame. You lost out on my money!

With the start of my Vampire Counts I figured I can never do an amazing job, but certainly good enough for the table top. Here's another example from the Grave Guard unit.

So this is how you do it.
Start with Apoxie Sculpt. You have to buy it in two's like here:

Mix it with a bit of water and press a clump on your base. While it is still wet, press it on some sand. You can add a stone, like the two top bases in the picture below.

Also, press your model on it, to create your footprint. Basing your model will be easier.

When basing a unit, make sure that all your additions, like rocks and other items don't inventervene with eachother. Rank up you unit. Apoxie Sculpt is easily remodified, even after an hour, just use some water to make it flexible.

Let it dry overnight. Then primer it, dry brush, wash and drybrush to make it look good. Add some grass. Done.

You can be more creative like making a little wall or adding old weapons. It also depends on the unit. Ghouls raid the battlefield after battle, so adding discarded weapons makes sense.

Painted

This ghoul is scrambling over a little hill..

or you can glue 3 bases together and make a bigger hill  with 3 or 4 warriors together.

Coming out of the ground

it's great fun and looks good on the tabletop and ANYONE can do this!

Go get some!

Mike

GW Pertinent is having a contest.

Tristan from GWpertinent is hosting a give away, you can win a painted OOP Dark Angel captain.

All you need to do to enter, is a post like this, mentioning 3 of his posts that you like.

Here are my choices.

1. Here is a recent post about his father making a bell tower. I like anything relating to family and hobby. This building is great with working lights, bell , and water fountain. It makes me want to build some fantasy buildings.

2. This is actually 2 posts but about the same thing, a super cool piece of original art from the girlfriend. What a great and thoughtful gift idea. I have to say I was a bit jealous, but my girlfriend is also very supportive.

3. Finally, Travel Space Hulk. I saw this one a long time ago and I think this is when I started to follow the blog. A really great idea using epic scale termies with magnets. I might even try something like this someday.

Mike and John's additions for this weeks Honor roll are:

Mike: -- My pick this week isn't about painting but is a great post AND  a great idea as well: A 5-Minute History of the Baneblade

John: -- I sure like the paint on this guy from Realm of Lead Addiction, be sure to click on the image to enlarge the pic, interesting idea of using a program for a limited pallet.

That finishes out this week's Honor Roll! I'd also like to mention a contest The Fallen Princes are running for the First 'Badab Veterans' Competition.  The contest ends on the 15th, so time is running out. A world's first! But only for the few that care...a movement tray idea

We spend a lot of time preparing the battlefield when we play, bringing tubs of terrain, making it look evocative and realistic. Then we start playing. A unit like this:

After the first round or so, the movement tray looks like this, empty on the back ranks, looks ugly

Wouldn't it be nice to to take of that bad looking rank of your movement tray like this:

then play on with the open back

OR put two single ranks together like this:

I basically magnetized the movement tray past the 2nd rank, giving me the option to remove a large part of the tray when it is not in use anymore. This is what is looks like:

Adding the magnets was easy

It's a strong tray, you can hold it up without fear of falling apart

Here are two of them before primer

and when painted and flocked. Can't really tell, right?

Now all this seems really trivial, but not to me. In my last game I was playing against an opponent who played Daemons. He used a movement tray for 4 ranks, but only used two because of points limitation. Even after he lost the 2nd rank, he still had to play with this big tray. It started to look bad on the battlefield, which is of course not big deal. At a certain point he couldn't wheel easy because the tray was so big, so he took the models out and put them on without a tray, which was fine.  But this got me thinking on making these adjustable movement trays. This is just one example.

The two trays above make:
2 x single rank
2 x double rank with open back or 1 double rank with closed back
2 x triple rank

Maybe someone will give this a try, I certainly will make a few more. Let's make that battlefield look as good a possible!
