Santa Cruz Warhammer February Invitational

Once again some of our local area Warhammer players met up on Friday night for a few games.

Now secretly squirreled away in our new private super clubhouse (thanks Glenn) games were played and snacks were eaten.

This month we kicked off our mini Fantasy Warband group. 200 point armies battled on small tables as we got acquainted with the rules.

40k players also battled it out throughout the evening.

Mike and I both committed to building, painting and basing 200 points for the Warbands battle.

Warbands is a great way to build up a great looking force in small, manageable steps without getting bogged down painting a ton of stuff.

Mike's 200pts of Vampire Counts.

John's 200pts of Lizardmen.

We were pitted against Dwarves, High Elves and Demons.

The night was a lot of fun with the usual suspects and some new faces, and is becoming a not to miss monthly event. If you are in the area, and interested in some casual gaming and good company, shoot us an email.

Time to get back to work on my next 200 points!

John

Barter Bucket: 2/26/11

Another world, another time. In the age of wonder.

A thousand years ago this land was green, until the Bucket cracked. A single piece was lost, a shard of the Bucket. Then strife began, and people began charging for bits and single models. Here in the castle of the Bucket, Santa Cruz Warhammer took control. Now the bits flow freely once more. Now the Bucket hangs above a shaft of air and fire. Once more gamers gather at the Bucket. Once more they replenish their bits bins. The Bucket...

The Tuesday Top Ten must survive! Let's do it here at SCWH

With the demise of From the Warp, there is a risk of losing the Tuesday Top Ten as well. I asked Ron if we could host it here at Santa Cruz Warhammer and of course Ron would love that. BUT John and I do not have the time to do it, busy as we are with life and not wanting to end up giving up on the blog all together.
So...

we are asking for a NEW WRITER for Santa Cruz Warhammer who will build the Tuesday Top Ten for all the blog readers. It's a big job and takes a lot of reading. It also needs a critical mind with a positive attitude. But in the end it honors bloggers all over the world for their hard work and dedication and that must feel good....

If you think you are the one, drop us a line at
mike.tess@charter.net

I hope someone will find the time to keep the FTW tradition going.

Mike

Beastman

SCWH Top 10 Models of All Time: Number 1

We have arrived at the number one: the best GW model of ALL TIME according to Mike and John from Santa Cruz Warhammer. Let's go:

Mike:
After all this agonizing over what ten models should be in this very personal list, picking my number one was surprisingly easy:

Ghazkhkull Thraka
This model is so splendidly brutal, so scary and so big, it is just impossible to resist its allure. The sculpt is absolutely glorious, the mech parts look real, his face so realistic and his oversized tools of the trade look competely believable. Thraka is posed like a man on a mission and lacks the 'stupid' look that many Ork models have; this Ork is no laughing matter. His design fits his fluff perfectly and his huge bulk looks completely in place in the universe of 40K. It really is my favorite model.

Sculptor: Brian Nelson

John:
The Sangunior
When I saw this model, I had to buy it.
He's a golden angel that flies with giant wings and has cool scrolls trailing from him and a pimp cup.
I don't even play Blood Angels, and I had to buy this model.
What a cool pose, epic and Christ like. the model is floating in the air supported by those cool scrolls.
In my opinion this really shows how GW has progressed in the quality of the models they are offering.
Gone are the days of simple and cartoonish sculpts and these new super detailed models are taking over.
I can't wait to see what comes next, these models are mini works of art, and I get to throw paint at them and bring them to life.

Sculptor: Juan Diaz

That brings this little series to a close. Thanks for checking in and following along with us, I hope we were able to show some of you some great models you might have missed.

As you can see there is a lot of good stuff out there and I think it is just getting better, and I am exited about the future. Next week we will share with you some of our almost-made-it-in the Top Ten of All time, a group of models that we will thrown in a post on monday. That's all for now!

SCWH Top 10 Models of All Time: Number 2

We are almost there! After going through a wonderful journey of awesome models, we are now getting close to the end. Without further ado I present to you Number 2 in the SCWH Top 10 of all time:

Mike
The Slann Mage Priest
This sculpt rules the Lizardmen army and is in my 'humble' opinion the best model in the Fantasy Range.
The sculpt is great. I find the arms and wrists resting on the legs the highlight of this model: I love the way the arms are so peaceful and quiet, you never want to arms to move, less it will be the last thing you will see.
The expression in the Priest's face is stoic, unlike his little helper, who is busy and manipulating. In the end though you feel this guy actually is a giant fake and is using his appearance to cheat his lessers into believing he is divine....he is probably thinking about food, drink and... it's a funny model as well as beautiful.

Sculptor: ?

Here's an excellent paint job done by Morpheus

John;
Bloodcrusher of Khorne
The juggernaut with a daemon on it, an amazing plastic kit, powerful and crazy looking, it even looks unstoppable. Great sense of motion, lots of texture.
This model is such an improvement from the last version, and I think it really shows how GW has been improving, adding detail realism and dynamic motion to the models they are putting out.

Beyond the Juggernaut, the bloodletter is also a great model and again quite an improvement over the older model. It has a more lean and agile look that conveys a frantic and desperate creature interested only in spilling blood.

Sculptor: Alex Hedstrom

Tomorrow will end this series and reveal our top picks, make sure to drop in for a visit and see our #1 choices.

SCWH Top 10 Models of All Time: Number 3

And here we are at number 3 in the Santa Cruz Warhammer Top Ten Models of All Time!

Mike

Khorne Lord on the Juggernaut
Wow, what a beast this model is. Full of evil power and high intelligence, this combo of men and (mech)beast is in my opinion the best Cavalry Model that GW ever made.
The sculpt is full of details: the shoulders with the emblems, the skulls everywhere, the mail on the legs, the mouth and eyes of the beast, the shield of the rider and the two heads available in the set, both great heads to use. The positioning of the model works great: the two are fighting over which direction to go: the warrior sees things faraway, the monster smells blood in the near vicinity; I really admire the way the model stands on the base.
Overall the models conveys a malice that is completely in line with the fluff and artwork for the Chaos Powers.

Sculptor: Jes Goodwin

John:

Gorbad Ironclaw
Gnarla the one tusked boar, leaping into battle, so much motion and a great, dynamic pose.
I really like how he is pointing the way with his finger to the rest of the boys.

The massive size makes him stand out from other boar boyz as the warlord, and who wouldn't want to follow this guy into battle, I can just see him smashing his way through the ranks of the enemy.

Sculptor: Alex Hedstrom

Tomorrow: Number 2!

SCWH Top 10 Models of All Time: Number 4

We are steadily moving towards number 1 in the Santa Cruz Warhammer Top Ten Models of All Time. Today it's time for number 4!

Mike:

Vampire Counts Corpse Cart
Wow. This model has rocked me from the moment it came out. This is to me the BEST example of design and fluff coming together in one piece of plastic. The kit is simply terrifying and gruesome and looking at the picture makes me wince. The necromancer is beautiful, his spear is just gross, in short this is a really impressive piece of art. I am actually building one right now and even unpainted, that pile of dead people looks nasty. Great job Well done!

Sculptors: Colin Grayson and Brian Nelson

John:
Orc Shaman
What a great face, very serious for an Orc, and a giant bone staff.
Ready to summon the power of Gork (or Mork?)
To me this model has such a different feel than other Orc models which I think shows how the Shaman is a bit of an outcast to the rest of the boyz. The long face looks like it has a story to tell.
He has such a unique look and the detail that separates him from the rank and file and sets him aside as an independent character.

Sculptor: Brian Nelson

Be sure to visit back for more tomorrow with our #3 choices.

SCWH Top 10 Models of All Time: Number 5

Welcome to the working week! And.......here's number 5 in the SCWH TTOAT. And let me say ONCE MORE, John and I didn't know from each other what models we were picking and in what order. That of course leads again to some strange choices:

Mike:

Skarsnik and Gobbla
Without a doubt, a Top Ten of All Time GW models could not be complete with Skarsnik and Gobbla. This model is so superb, I don't know where to start. OK, the squig is awesome! He has stitches, a great cancerous tongue, huge fangs and brutal and mean looking tiny eyes. The lord holding him seems mellow and has hit pet under control, he looks ready to dish out an order to assault some petty humies. The hat of the guy is so over the top, it's laugout funny and having a little grot using a mushroom as a weapon is just the freedom GW should give to all their sculptors. On top of that, this is one of the few models with a completely sculpted base including huge slabs of slate. A wonderful job! Go paint on up!

Sculptor: Mike Anderson

John;

Goblin Warboss on Giant Squig

Now this is getting weird, did we really both pick a squig based model for our choices? What are the odds?
Great sense of motion, helmet falling off, silly and cool at the same time.
Just like a gobbo to hop on a squig and charge into battle.
Lots of great detail, but the motion that is portrayed is what really drew me into this model.
This is another model that was simple and fun to paint with enough detail to keep me interested.

Sculptor: Juan Diaz

Tomorrow, #4!

The Barter Bucket has one purpose; gamers helping other gamers. Hard-to-find bits, regular pieces, and whole models are what's in the details. The Barter Bucket is a place to trade in your old stuff for new, or to get that one piece you need without buying it as part of a much more expensive kit or especially as an overpriced single bit. SCWH Top 10 Models of All Time: Number 6

We are slowly making our way to the top and today we have landed at the sixth spot in the SCWH Top Ten Models of All Time. Let's have it!

Mike
Spacemarine Chaplain
Here's one of the rare Space Marine Models that really reflects the fluff and artwork surrounding him. This Chaplain is one scary guy and he is very devout which is probably very bad for his foes. Although his pose is not very dynamic, the face is extremely expressive and your eyes go to it right away. And what a face it is...very very good. I like his incense bowl at the bottom of his feet; a very nice detail.

John;
Dwarf Lord
What a great model, I think it really captures the feel of the Dwarves.
The face is great with a stone cold stare, the piercing eyes staring down his opponent across the battlefield.
Look how his moustache hangs over his hand on his axe.
He looks like he is contemplating his strategy, or mulling over a great grudge he is about to avenge.
Perfect model to lead a clan of dwarves to the fight.

SCWH Top 10 Models of All Time: Number 7

Today we have arrived at the 7th spot in the SCWH Top Ten Models of All Time. And I want to say right away John and I did NOT tell each other which model ended up in which spot. So today, we end up with TWO Fantasy Chaos Sorcerers....I think getting this result after looking at 1000 plus models is really, really weird....

Mike

Warrior of Chaos Sorcerer
I told you all before I really was looking for models that embodied the spirit of the excellent artwork that GW puts in each codex..most models do not get close, but this one does. A crouching, lowly, mean spirited and evil (used to be) man, holding a book that looks like a portal to the warp...this model really gives me the creeps. The detail work is abundant: the book, the staff, all the screaming heads...but also the body position and the effect it has on the folds in the cloth...I really like it. Unfortunately I don't have this model but hope to pick it up one of these days..

John:
Nurgle Sorcerer
Chubby, cloaky, cool staff, lots of scrolls.

Great details in the model and you know I love the Nurgle theme.
This model makes a great focal point in a Nurgle themed Chaos army, almost like a necromancer.

Imagine seeing this guy walking into your little village, he looks unassuming and frumpy, but hes kind of spooky and you know he is going to be trouble.

This model was also fun to paint, great for blending greens and earthy tones.

SCWH Top 10 Models of All Time: Number 8

Today we have arrived at number 8 in the Santa Cruz Warhammer Top Ten Models of All Time.

Mike:
Njall Stormcaller
I think this model is the best Space Marine Model out there (except one...). His pose is just wonderful: dynamic, ready to meet the challenge AND his role as a priest with a magic staff are excellently implemented.
Tons and tons of details on this one, like the runes on the armour, the creases on his holster and of course the wonderful pelt with head on top of his armour. I actually modeled this guy to make him Logan Grimnar, because he looked so regal and lord like.

Sculptor: Juan Diaz

John:
Typhus
Master of the Death Guard, giant power scythe, cool helmet.

My favorite Chaos Power is Nurgle and the Death Guard my favorite chapter.

Typhus has great fluff and this is a great model, really like the tube things on his back, and he fits in very well with the Forge World Death Guard Terminator upgrade kit, making a great looking squad.

The best detail I think is the power scythe, it really makes the model and has a sinister look to it.

SCWH Top 10 Models of All Time: Number 9

We are back again with the Santa Cruz Warhammer Top Ten Models of All Time! Today we have reached number 9!

Mike:
Here is my number 9:
Imperial Guard Kasrkin Squad
These storm troopers are absolutely wonderful. They look threatening, very well equipped and ready for anything. And then there is the sergeant, who face is really great: arrogant and ruthless. The models have tons of great details, like the visors, the kneepads with straps that go around the legs and many more. They are my favorite Guard models and I will be one of the few who is not looking forward to plastic stormtroopers. The newer Guard sculpts really don't come close to the level of stuff like this. If you don't have them, get some and paint them up, they are a real treat to work with.

John:
Limited edition Dark Angels Company Master.
This guy is super cool. To get him you had to buy the D.A. army box set, or pay a fortune for him on Ebay. You can't consider yourself a Dark Angels player/ collector if this guy doesn't have a special spot in your collection.
Giant combi weapon...check!
Cool cape covering shoulder...check!
Inner circle robe with emo hoody.....check!

The Dark Angels will always be my favorite chapter, and I was too cheap to buy the set when it came out and ended up chasing this bad boy down on Ebay and paid through the teeth for him, but I got one...and its mine.
