A fun little project coming up!

I asked John to come up with his top ten all time favorite models from GW (Forgeworld excluded) and rank them from 10 to 1. I did the same without disclosing anything about our choices. Next week we will start posting about them, telling a bit about why we like our choices.
It was VERY hard to narrow it all down to 10 but very fun (and contentious). We will post every day for ten days, starting next Monday. We hope you will enjoy it and invite you all to comment kindly or harshly.

Barter Bucket: Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Welcome to the 2011 Barter Bucket!

Almost two years ago this little orphan bucket made its humble debut. Now it's helped get over 2.3 million bits into the hands of eager gamers all over the world and as far away as the International Space Station! It continues to grow and thrive, and thanks to its established home here at SCWH, its only gotten better.

The Barter Bucket has one purpose; gamers helping other gamers. Hard-to-find bits, regular pieces, and whole models is what in the details. The Barter Bucket is a place to
trade in your old stuff for new, or to get that one piece you need without buying it as part of a much more expensive kit or especially as an overpriced single bit. This concept is kept alive by the cooperative spirit of our gaming community as a whole.

If you see something below you can help out with, or see something you're interested in picking up,
please contact the individual directly through their listed email address.

Knights of Bal Timorea - Unit Pics and Winner!

After traveling hundreds of miles from all across the realm, the Knights of Baltimorea have assembled at the Castle of the Holy Cross ( Santa Cruz) . The first sons of the High Kings have formed up to battle their common foes.

Some pics of all the Knights. Click on the pics for big images, I took the liberty of matching all the base edges, to make them look cohesive.

and as a real Fantasy formation

I would like to thank all of the guys that built a model for this project, and sent them in.

1. Gyro of Mik's Minis,
2. PapaJJ from DiceRolla
3. Meatball from My Dice Hate Me
4. Alex from One Inch Warriors
5. Elbrun from Painting Sanctuary
6. Ron from From The Warp

Using a random number generator at Random.org and the above list, we have selected;

#4. Alex from One Inch Warriors

Alex will receive,
all the Knights of Baltimorea
a new Bretonnian army book
enough bits for 2 more knights
a standard bearer
a Pegasus Knight Hero

That is just enough to have a legal army list and a great start on a new army.

Thanks again every one and congrats to Alex!

Deathwing Project Update - Budget Thunder Hammers ?

In order to expand my Deathwing, I figured with all the new hype over the updated Thunder Hammer / Storm Shields I would add a few more.

I am not sure if they will all be in the same squad, or if I will sprinkle them around a bit, but the end result will be 5 more Terminators.

I was in the area so I decided to swing by my favorite FLGS Game Kastle today, I thought I might grab a box of assault Termies.

$50. for 5 termies with hammers/shields and some extra claws.

I like the poses of the new plastics, but that's a big lump o cash and I have a bunch of termie stuff at home that I need to use up.

Black Reach Termies are getting 10-15 bucks a set ( I have a few sitting around ) and the big shield does a pretty good job hiding the slightly more boring models.

I found a cool box of big resin shields with Dark Angels looking robed angel motifs made by Hi Tech Miniatures, only 4 shields $11.25

Next I grabbed a blister of hammers from Max Mini, 10 resin hammers $9.00 ( only needed 4, but will have some for the next batch)

I also picked up another 5 of the Forge Craft Highland Crag resin bases I am using for my Deathwing troops, 5 bases $6.50

Here is everything I bought, with my left over terminators.

So even if you pay
$15.00 for the Black Reach Termies
$11.25 for the shields
$9.00 for the hammers

you are still only at $35.25 for 5 termies, a savings of $14.75 and you will have 6 spare hammers.( good as I have a few extra shield bits I want to play around with.

for the $50 box set you get 5 THSS sets, 5 pairs of extra claws and better poses.

Next up, building the models.

Wolf Wing Update; Bishkek 2nd Update!

Check out the first five models of my Wolf Wing, which eventually will grown into 17 Models, 1 Landraider, a drop pod and something else. I am really not sure if I will ever play with them, but I do enjoy the modeling. Here are the 5, now finished:
If you want to read more about the HQ's, click on the Spacewolves label in the content cloud on the left. Here are the two latest models, that I painted over the last 2 weeks:

Terminator with Assault Cannon

and Terminator with Stormshield and Thunder Hammer

Also, since I have been a bit more active in the local game scene in Santa Cruz, I have been really encouraged by the kind words many players had for my Bishek 2nd Army (for more on those, click on the label Bishek 2nd). It encouraged me to try to finish this army, before deciding what to do with it. So I painted up a Storm trooper as a test and primed the other nine...

Hope this inspires!

On the Workbench - Forge World Deathwing Dred.

I have been doing some work on this little guy, not sure if I will fit him into a list, but it's a great model.

Still have some blending and detail work to sort out.

I did use a giant slate base that matches my other hero bases, so he will fit in nicely, if need be, not to mention a fancy Forge World drop pod, have you seen the rules for the Lucius dreadnought drop pod?

hint : assault vehicle.

If you look closely in the background, you can see the Knights of Baltimorea setting up to charge, just waiting for one more to show up in the mail before we do the drawing and they find a new home.

Updating My Deathwing to the New FAQ Amendments

Die hard Deathwing players got a decent boost with the unexpected amendments in the recent GW FAQ update.

Some of the worst list options in the past are now some of the best, and once standard list items are now tossed aside.

How does this effect modeling my Deathwing army?

In the most simple terms, I am swapping in some Thunderhammers and Storm Shields, and Cyclone Missile Launchers and adding an Apothecary.

Hammers will give some punch and the Storm Shields a 3++ save.

Missiles will give 2 shots, some range and a choice of S4 AP6 blast for troops or S8 AP3 for anti tank, and I can still use it on a model with close combat weapons.

Apothecary will add feel no pain to my assault squad. I painted his helmet, right knee and left claw white and added a Narthecium/Reductor next to the white claw.

So here is the new updated look of the squads;

The HQ choices, with an added Terminator Librarian option.

The 1st or Assault Squad with 2 hammer and 3 claw Terminators, one of the claws is the Apothecary.

2nd Squad with a hammer and Cyclone with chain fist.

3rd Squad with chainfist, and Cylcone and hammer/ shield on same model.

The rules also changed the POTMS on the Land Raiders to BS4, but they still look the same.

I have done a lot of reading on Tactics for the Deathwing at the Deathwing Tactics thread at Warseer.
Russells Teapot, Lion El Jason and others there, have done some great work in keeping the Deathwing alive, and now with new options the forum is abuzz with new ideas and new takes on Deathwing tactics, and I imagine there will be sweeping changes and new favorite list builds.

I know I will be watching.

Is the Game really worth the playing?

Yesterday I played a small game against John at the local monthly Games Day in Santa Cruz. I didn't have a lot of time and we only got in a couple of rounds before I had to go. We had a good time, but not because of the game, just because we get along.
John's Deathwing annihilated me in the two turns that he had and during my turns I did not inflict a single casualty or wound or damage. Johns tactics were sound and he had the first turn and that was that.

Pondering it all over, I realize that I have not played a nice, WONDERFUL, game in a long, long time. Either they are super lopsided, with two possible scenarios: I am happy and slowly begin to feel guilty and start 'forgetting' bonus attacks that I might have as to not aggravate my opponent further; OR I feel crappy and then don't care anymore, game is over anyway.
Or the game goes so slowly that we can never get beyond a first or second turn, which takes away a lot of the possibility of a surprise turnaround. For example, yesterday on another table there was an apocalypse game going on, they spent hours on the first turn. That doesn't mean they don't have fun but it shows me something about the game is not right.

With that in mind, I just don't know how so many thousands of players make this game work for themselves. Am I the only one that feels the game is slow, has too many rules, is determined mostly by luck (like getting the first turn) and brings out the worst in people when they play.

My buddy Christian, who is a much more experienced player than I am, keeps telling me I need to play more. His reasoning is that the more you play, the more you enjoy it. But at this point that is like someone telling me the best view is from the top of Mount Everest...

Maybe I am just in love with modeling, Santa Cruz Warhammer and chatting with other people about building armies. My dream to inspire others to take modeling super seriously. That part I love deeply and I can't wait to get back to my current Space Wolf Project. I still feel a little sad about it all though, something is not right..

I'm Gyro of Mik's Minis, welcome! To participate, all you need to do is send me an email to miksminis at gmail.com listing what you are looking for, or have as surplus that might help someone else out with. It's a lot of fun, and you really can save lives for the cost of two Chaos Marine backpacks and a single meltagun per day.

Make sure your email is in list form with
plenty of detail, including the quantities of each you're looking for and quantities of what you have. Emails received by Thursday will post that weekend here at SCWH, otherwise they'll get queued up for the following week. Thanks, and remember, change comes from within...your bits box!

Space Wolves: 2 HQ's and a Sergeant finished!

I am using some new lights to photograph these models, I hope you will enjoy the better images. Here are the first 3 wolves of the group of 17 that I am going to paint.
Logan Grimnar is in the middle.

a closeup of his handmounted stormbolter. Remember, I used the power fist just for modeling purposes, in the game Logan is not allowed that feature.
The bolter is pretty beat up...
Here's Arjac Rockfist.
And the sergeant with the new combi Melta-Bolter.
the base is from Secret Weapon Miniatures, it's called Runic Mountain Bases, with straight edges
More will follow!

Using Satin Primer instead of Flat/Matte

After painting 2 HQ's for my baby Space Wolf Army I already got tired of painting on the base color of the armour (after primer). So to skip a step I went to the hardware store and found the blue that matches Shadow Blue exacly. It's Rustoleum Painters Touch ultra cover Wildflower Blue. The only problem was that there was no flat finish available, only satin, which is pretty shiny.
Thinking back at my Forgeworld modeling bible and knowing that in that method all the models are sprayed glossy before weathering, I decided to give it a go. And with excellent succes!

Here's the model sprayed blue
Here's a model after 1 generous coat of devlan mud. Because the surface is glossy, the wash falls into the recesses very nicely without pooling up on flat surfaces.
Here are a few more details.
Of course this is just basecoating it, but it makes for a nice start. The armour looks just where I want it!

Maybe give that a go on an old model, it works pretty nicely

Knights of Bal Timorea - I'm Finished X 2 !

That's right, I finished two knights!

I was working on the red and yellow knight using my Dickerman family heraldry.
It is fairly complex in 28mm, so I had some decals made up by Citadel Six, and here he is finished and ready to join the other knights of Bal Timorea.

I had some extra knightly bits around, so I decided that I would also model a knight using my Mother's family name, Wilken, which I also had heraldry for.
This is fairly simple, but while doing my other decals, they threw a few of these in also. I used a decal on the shield, but the rest I decided to try freehand, and it wasn't too hard.

So there are my two knights, a little bit of my family history, ready to go off to the winner.

That will bring the total to 8 painted knights, a Bretonnia army book, a knight on a Pegasus, and I will also be throwing in a standard bearer and 2 more unpainted knights.

Just enough to start a small knight army.

The rest of the knights will be rolling in soon, and then I will have the drawing, and the knights will have a new General!

Barter Bucket: Saturday, January 8th 2011

Space Wolves: Combi-Weapon How-to-Tutorial!

As you know by now, I am not much of a player of 40K. So when it comes to making lists and prepare squad building, I go to blogs that make a living talking about tactics and strategy. With my new Space Wolf project, I have been visiting The Space Wolves Blog, which is a wonderful resource for all kinds of tactics but also modeling tips. Following their advice I am building a squad of 5 with 3 terminators carrying Combi Weapons. They have a tutorial about making them, and it inspired me to create a Combi Weapon myself. Here's the tutorial on how to make them. First the end result:
I actually made two different ones, the one above faces the melta gun inwards, the one I photographed for this tutorial faces out, it's up to you what look you like better.

I started with the BA Deathcompany Melta Pistol. You all should be able to get that one at the bitz stores or on the Barter Bucket.
make the cut
Grab a bolter (not a storm bolter!) and with a knife flatten one side as much as you can. do the same with the melta pistol.
Glue them together
I always add plastic tube to my bolters, looks tighter then drilling out holes:
Glue them on
At this point I wanted to hide the two pieces-look by giving the gun a full top cover. For that I found in my extensive bitz box this piece: i believe a bolter cover for a pintle mounted gun of a Chimera or Rhino. maybe a reader knows...
This piece has some stuff in it that needs to be removed, not easy
Then throw it on
Looks hokey now,but remember, when painted the two color look of gun and cover will look cool
Also, cut the back a little closer to the back of the gun
Almost there..now find you Termie arm, cut off the storm bolter
and glue on your new best friend
I did some greenstuff on the back, not very good at it but it will do when painted. Now we need to resolve the power supply to the melta gun. Like so, using some Dragon Forge Power Cable, possibly the BEST bit in the 40K universe. EVERYONE should have a baggie of pewter powercables from Jeff at Dragon Forge. It's cheap and I have used them in all my armies
Now add a little cover between pewter and plastic, looks neat and clean. make the cut...
add it on! When you kitbash, always give yourself lots of angles and lines, so painting will be fun.
It's done!
And here is our hero, wielding it!
Other side
here the other variant, with the Melta part on the inside and the bolter on the outside. There I ran the existing powercable over his inside arm. Looks cool as well.
A closeup. You see this cover also had a great gunsight. I only had one of those.

Hope this inspires all you Space marine players to get out the knife and glue!
