The Knights of Bal Timorea! - Almost Done

As time runs out on this project, I am nearing finished, just a few more details and he will be ready. He looks like this now,

Here is one Mike did,

Mike liked his model so much, he decided to make it into a vignette and keep it, so I think I am going to do one more to make up the numbers, I have some heraldry for my Mom's side of the family, and so I will be adding Sir Wilken to the roster.

I guess I had hoped for a better turnout for this, but it is the holiday season, and I understand that folks are busy, and asking people to give stuff away is asking a lot.

I will say that the entries that are coming in are much better than I had hoped for, with great looking models from everyone, also with a smaller group entering, each person has a better chance at winning. The winner of this group will be receiving some nicely done models.

Here are some pics of models from some of the participants, you can find links to there sites on the right.

PapaJJ from DiceRolla

Meatball from My Dice Hate Me

Elbrun from Painting Sanctuary

Ron from From The Warp

Barter Bucket's Gyro of Mik's Minis,

I think there may be other knights in the works, but I haven't seen them, so if you have one in progress, or are starting one now (better work fast) let us know so we can add you to the list.

Space Wolves: Making Njall into Logan Part 2

As all of you have might have read, I am changing some stuff around in my modeling world. Inspired by John's tiny Death Wing Army and Ron's (FTW) minmalist approach, I have decided to sell my entire Ork Army, including everything I have thrown on this blog and some stray models to boot. I have added a little ebay link, where I try to sell a model once in a while.
I love my Bishkek Army, which I will never sell AND as a honour rule, I will never sell my dwarves, although they are unpainted and unused.
So my new project is much smaller in scope: an all Terminator Space Wolf Army under the guidance of Logan Grimnar. I made a deal on the barter bucket this week, swapping out some Mega Nobz for some SW terminators; the bucket is great, you all should use it.
Anyway, I had started already on Logan, so here goes the new project: The Tiny Space Wolf Army.

I have been painting like crazy on the Njall to Logan Conversion over the holiday weekend and he is slowly getting there. Of course most Wolf players recognize Njall but this wonderful Juan Diaz sculpt is so heroic and massive that to me he speaks Logan Grimnar all the way. Of course Logan doesn't wear rune armour but then agan, it is very likely that Logan would inscribe his armour with runes regardless if he needs them or not; it all about honoring Leman Russ anyway. Besides, to me the current GW Logan Model is too small and out of proportion.

Here is the picture from the first post. I swapped out Njall's arms with some kitbashed ones and removed the raven stand, replacing it with green stuff and a terminator light. The rest on my thoughts for this model you can find here
Here's the painted version. I haven't touched the arms yet and can give anyone this advice: don't model on parts if they are going to obstruct your painting!
I hate painting Space marines and this model is super hard to do well. Give me a lowly Guardsman anytime. Damn, this model is a bear!
here's the back
and top view. I worked hard on the wolf but for some reason all this work hasn't translated into what I want. I know it's my first model and I can always redo it once i find the right combination of colors.
With his arms on he will look a lot better. Hope you will stay tuned for the next year or so!
Only have 15 more terminators, one more HQ, a drop pod, a Landraider and maybe a Dread to do. Will make 1500 points. Anyone has ideas about the army list? It has to fit in one case.

Happy Holidays!

To all of you and your families, from us at Santa Cruz Warhammer,

have a great holiday!

Happy Modeling Days!

John and I wanted to say THANKS for reading our little blog, helping us become better modelers with constructive comments AND of course thanks for the enormous support that we received from people all over the world during the Storm Wardens Project, with which all of you raised (might I remind you...) $16.000 dollars for Doctors without Borders.

We are planning a new project on that scale for the spring of this year....

Stay tuned!
John and Mike

A new Beginning...and some elf night work

John and I played a game a few weeks ago and fun though it was, most exciting was John walking up with a tiny suitcase in which his whole army was nestled snugly. So I did some digging around and found out I could build a Space Wolf all terminator army, centered around Logan Grimnar. For 1500 points I might end up with even less models then Johns Deathwing and I love the idea of having a compact project. So here's the start.

My Logan Grimnar is based around Njall Stormcaller. This model is fantastic, sculpted by my favorite GW artist Juan Diaz, and looks very badass. I removed the raven stand and added some fur.
For the left arm he will carry a giant axe. Built up using the hammer of the Death Company set and an old Dwarf ax for the blade, it works nicely. I added a triangular greenstuff thingie on top plus a terminator cross.
The right arm will have a handmount stormbolter. In the codex Logan is not allowed to use a powerfist, which is weird, Magnus Calgar is less points, but DOES have that powerfist/stormbolter combo. Anyway, I love the look of the massive glove with the gun, so I decided to model it like that, but not count the powerfist.
here is the set
and here is a mock up I did earlier today using some UHUtac.
Oh yeah, and this was made tonight in the woodshoppe of Santa's Elves. Some stuff for the playmos...it's fun making xmas gifts for the kids yourself.
Cheers
Mike

Deathwing Project Update - My Second "Finished" Army

Yep, its done. 1500pts of pure Deathwing, 19 models total, fits in a briefcase, every ranged weapon is 24"

Dark Angels and Deathwing were my very first army choice, and I am happy to finally have a finished 1500pt army.

After seeing FTW Ron's tiny army in a box at Games Day this year, I decided to get to work.

The Idea is that they are on a very harsh planet with heavy acid rain, so they show a bit more weathering than I would normally use.

All bases are resin with troops all on bargain priced "Highland Crag" bases by Forgecraft Games, while HQ have more substantial "Shale" bases by Micro Arts Studios.

HQ= Master Belial with claws.

2nd HQ= Term. Chaplain

Troops= 5 man Term. Assault Squad
4x twin lightning claws,
1x heavy flamer+ chain fist

These guys roll in a Land Raider Crusader with both HQs. If these guys get the assault on you, its going to be rough.
That's 25 power weapon attacks that re roll to hit, 21 of which also re roll wounds and 3 strength 8 chainfist attacks for 2D6 armor penetration which re roll to hit. That's up to 28 attacks that ignore armor saves from 7 models with 11 wounds, that all have 2+ armor and invulnerable saves.

Troops= 2x 5 man Term. squad
+assault cannon
+ chainfist.

Heavy= 2x Land Raider Crusader

The first is in weathered Deathwing colors and is the Terminator assault squad and HQ's whip.

The second is in reversed colors of Dark Angels green, on loan from the chapter armory.

I took an old hard plastic 19"x14"case and a pluck foam tray, and ended up with just enough room for all the models, plus one extra (Term. Librarian), mini rules book and codex, custom Deathwing dice and measuring tape.
The foam is glued in and everything is very cozy and safe.

Sorry that the pics are not that great, its been raining nonstop and I have to shoot inside with poor light.

A brandspanking new kitbashed DIY Banewolf from scraps:

When I finished the diorama with the Bishkek 2nd Basilisk Battery, i looked at my work area and saw countless spues, discarded and cut up half bitz and other leftover scraps. I challenged myself to make my last Bishkek vehicle out of scraps and settled on a 3rd Hellhound/Banewolf. Here's the model:
The sides are from the old style Rhino. It was amazing to see that the top of a chimera follows the countours perfectly...that took no time at all. On the front and bottom I added some plate work from an old Chimera sprue and using this's and that's built up the front, adding a driver's window and a flamer.
Here's a top view
The turret I scratchbuilt out of plastic card, adding the rivets and other odd bitz, using some powercable bit to help make the barrel look good.

I had a bunch of pipe laying around like this stuff below:

here's the link to more pictures of that kit. My buddy Christian give it to me and they sell it in San Jose at Game kastle
(later added: here is the link to this product online if you want to buy it)
Amazingly, the pipes fit perfectly into the gunner holes of the Chimera and the bigger tank move perfectly into the top hatch, making it look a bit sunken. I mean, this build is so easy, it took me no more then an hour from start to finish, not counting drying time.
Here's a simple, hourlong paint job:

No need to spend 50 bucks on a Banewolf when you can make this!

Challenge: anyone who wants to make one like this, send me an email and I will send you some piping. There is a rule of course: I want to see this tank soon! I will post it here. Obviously, i don't have a lot left, but enough for one or two.

The Bishkek 2nd Basilisk: part 8, it's a finished diorama!

The Bishkek 2nd Basilisk Battery is finally finished. The diorama is painted up and ready for play/display. I took a bunch of photos, maybe they will inspire a reader to do something similar. It is incredibly fun to make something like this. You can click on the images to see them bigger.

This was the inspiration: WWII German 88mm battery
Here's what I came up with:
I didn't want to make the base too big, so I stuck with two ammo cylinders in the wall
Here are the totals:

Of course I am still learning how to make the plastic card bend to my will and if I had to do it again, I would not have a separation in the middle. Next time it will be better...
Top view. I really worked on the positioning of everything, trying to create a diagonal line of interest from the top right to the bottom left.
Very important to me also was conveying a feeling of cramped space, like we all read in Gaunt's Ghosts.

Here are the details
Crates and gerry cans. The top one I drilled out and created a little spill in the sand
Ammo crate, dinged up
More ammo. Notice the open one. I sawed of 4 sides of a resin ammocrate and glued them back together again so I could put a shell in.
Barbed wire
Barrels, plank and tarp. The tarp was made from paper, dipped in glue.
The Gnome. I made sure to have the sand blow up against the vehicle
Back of the Gnome with grimy guardsman
He is noticing his comrade asking for silence...
He has spotted something..
Some aerials

The gun is detachable. I played a game against John last week and brought the whole thing, which looked great on the table. We just ignore the cover save part. It's a pity not to use it

That was it. Hope you enjoyed this series. To see the other parts, click on Basilisk in the label cloud.
