Hordes of Vormond: a test model

I painted up a test model for the Hordes of Vormond Ghoul troop. I had some problems coming up with the paintscheme...GW tends to paint them in lighter, pastel like colors, but the codex mentions right of the bat that ghouls have 'dark' skin. So I decided to paint them black. I had this idea of black skin with orange shining eyes. I didn't know what it would look like so I googled to see if anyone else did it and I could find one person: right here. (scroll down a bit).
I wanted mine to be a bit darker and not have the light nails, I think they are a bit distracting from the face.

Anyway, here he is:
Comments/critique appreciated!

Barter Bucket: Saturday, July 31st 2010

Welcome to the Barter Bucket!

Are you looking for a bunch of Space Marine helmets to adorn your Warboss' Battlewagon with? How about just one more combi-weapon for that custom command squad you've been building? Got a bunch of Cadians laying around from a project that never got off the ground? All this and more is exactly why the Barter Bucket was hatched; gamers helping out other gamers with hard-to-find bits, regular pieces, and whole models. It's a place to trade in your old stuff for new, or to get that one piece you need without buying it as part of a much more expensive kit. This runs on the cooperative spirit of the gaming community as a whole.

If you see something below you can help out with, or see something you're interested in picking up, please contact the individual directly through their listed email address.

The Hordes of Vormond

The end of the Stormwardens Project coincided with the new Fantasy release, which got me really inspired to start another long term project, this time with Fantasy. No, the Bishkek 2nd are not forgotten and I am preparing a post about my kitbashed and retooled Veteran Squad, but the urge to do Fantasy has a firm grip on me.

I decided to do the Vampire Counts and aquired the army through our own Santa Cruz Warhammer Barter Bucket. About how I got the deal and what a great thing the Barter Bucket is, I will do a post next week. Anyway, I quickly decided that in order to make the modeling fun, was to do some interesting basing. Here are some images of building the troop: 10 ghouls.

I used a 50/50 mix of Apoxy Sculpt and built little mounds on 5 single bases.
The ghouls scour the battlefield looking for tasty things, so I made the bases pieces of a battlefield after the battle:
here are the five single bases in buildup:
A broken shield, a snapped spear, a hand that sticks out of the mud, all the usual gloomy details..
Here is the finished rank:
some closeups:
You will probably agree that the ghouls are a very, very succesful sculpt and at first glance are my favorite models in the whole VC range. They are dynamic, realistic, detailed and they look terrifying, in short really fun models to build.

The second batch of five was to become the front rank of this group and I wanted it to be one solid rank, all on the same base. For that I glued all five bases together....
and add Apoxy Sculpt up top for terrain. I also filled in the front opening caused by the beveled bases. Here is the front 5 with the boss in the middle:
Some details:
And here is the finished group.
Modeling Fantasy is very different from 40K, mostly when you look at the backstory of your army. There is a lack of 'history' of Warhammer world. Although GW wants you to believe it is on par with the Empire in 40K, it really is a lot more shallow and added to that is that for us in the 21st century, its easier to connect with the bigger picture of life 40.000 years from now then with life in Fantasy land. That made it harder for me thinking about what I am going to do with this project. One advantage for me as a builder: models in Fantasy feel more real as individuals, they all have fun skills, attributes and recognizable weapons, and that makes it interesting to really spend time on each troop and give them their own identity.
To start this process I had to come up with a name:
Hope you will kindly follow some of my endeavors, I am very excited to add some Fantasy to the Santa Cruz Warhammer mix!

Voytek the 40K Bear

Well, my Vostroyans have a cool looking command squad, the models are great, but I needed something a bit different to shake it up a bit.

I have done other "counts as" models for this army and I always liked the idea of Nork Deddog as the Commander's bodyguard.

I Remembered a cool WWII story of a Polish artillery group that had a real 6 foot tall 500 pound Syrian Brown bear mascot that walked upright and also went to war and even helped out by carrying heavy stuff.

During the Battle of Monte Casino;

Voytek, who all this time had been watching his comrades frantically loading heavy boxes of ammunition, came over to the trucks, stood on his hind legs in front of the supervising officer and stretched out his paws toward him. It was as if he was saying: I can do this. Let me help you . The officer handed the animal the heavy box and watched in wonder as Voytek loaded it effortlessly onto the truck. Backwards and forwards he continued, time and time again, carrying heavy shells, artillery boxes and food sacks from truck to truck, from one waiting man to another, effortlessly. The deafening noise of the explosions and gunfire did not seem to worry him. Each artillery box held four 23 lbs live shells; some even weighed more than a hundred. He never dropped a single one. And still he went on repeatedly, all day and every day until the monastery was finally taken.

So I had to have a Voytek for my Vostroyans, and I wanted a GW bear model, and wouldn't you know it, they just came out with one for the Fantasy Empire army, and after removing some of the unneeded stuff, this is what he looks like.

I am unsure how to deal with his ripper gun stats, I guess I could just have a gun slung on his back but I was trying to think of a cooler way to represent the ripper gun ranged attacks, like boulder throwing or a cyber growl attack or something. Anyone have any ideas?

The Storm Wardens are Going to Games Day!

It has been confirmed, the army, the new owner, and even I, will be at Games Day USA.

I hope to see you there, I will be the ogre looking guy with the Storm Wardens T shirt and silly grin shaking hands with everyone like a campaigning diplomat, (well one of them anyway).

If you do make it, perhaps you can even play against the Storm Wardens army and its new commander.

It will be great to meet everyone and say thanks in person.

I'll bring a camera and my Death Guard.

My first Games Day, what should I do?

The winner of this last mini give away for the Imperial Guard coffee mug, dog tag, a pair of Winsor & Newton brushes, brush cleaner "Super Secret Basing Sand" and a kit to make 5 flaming markers is:

JOSEPH MOYER from ADAMS MASSACHUSETTS

this also marks the end of time for contributing to the Storm Wardens Project.

We will be announcing the totals tomorrow and will have a few more announcements during the week leading up to the winner being drawn Sunday July 25th at 7pm PST, more details to come....

So please stay tuned and prepare to have your world rocked.

John

This is the LAST DAY!

The Storm Wardens Project is coming to a close. Tonight at 7 PM PST we will take down the donation buttons and announce the last Mini Drawing Winner.
At that point all the wonderful people who have donated will have to wait one week to find out who will get the incredible Storm Wardens Army, as pictured here.

I have been following the blogs, the forums and other websites in the last six week, finding out what everyones feelings were about this project and one thing stood out: it was all about doing something good! Of course many wargamers were excited about the army or the secondary prizes. But in the end it all boiled down to being amazed and excited about the generosity of the wargaming community. You all have proven that a simple hobby like ours can unite thousands to be a force for good.

You have until 7 PST or 10 EST to do it one last time. Otherwise just enjoy the day. Tomorrow we will announce the collected amount. Better stay tuned for that....

Thank you all, we have absolutely loved setting this up.

Storm Wardens Last Mini-Drawing: SCW Stuff

This is it, the last Storm Wardens Project Mini Drawing. This is also your last chance to get on board with a contribution.

Sunday July 18th 7PM PST, we are closing the Paypal links and drawing a winner for this Mini Drawing. After that there will not be a way to be apart of this and in the running to be drawn for the army.

Up for grabs this week is some swag from us at Santa Cruz Warhammer.

First up some GW super rare and exclusive Guard swag, I waited in line forever to buy this stuff, you don't have to.

An Imperial Guard coffee mug

and dog tag

How about a pair of the greatest paint brushes in the world,
Winsor & Newton Number 7s in 000 an 0

and to take good care of them, a tub of fancy brush cleaner.

Also a tub of "Super Secret Basing Sand ". This is the finest blend of basing sand in the galaxy and you can't buy it anywhere. (figure not included)

Last but not least, I am adding a kit to make 5 flaming markers for you to build up and use on the battlefield.

Watch your opponent's face when you pop his favorite tank and drop one of these on top of it.

Here is a Santa Cruz Warhammer exclusive video of the sweet flickering destruction.

Well there you go, good luck in the Mini Drawing, if you don't get this stuff, don't worry you could still win the army.

I also have a feeling there is going to be some other great stuff to be drawn.

Well, ok, I know there is.

So keep an eye out for some more prize announcements in the next week. We have had some late donations and we are going to draw them on the 25th also, so more prizes will equal more winners drawn. Don't miss it!

Storm Wardens Army, Making it Yours

Winning the Storm Wardens Army would be about the coolest thing ever.

Well, besides maybe being one of us lucky Build Team members that gets to pitch in with all the talent and be a part of making blogger history. If you ever see someone wearing one of these super limited edition Build Team only Tshirts, you can be sure they built something for this army.

So I figured, why not give the winner just that opportunity?

Not only will they be in some pretty cool company, but they will also have the chance to make the army their own, building the last squad of troops, and finishing off the whole army, and actually earn them self one of those cool Tshirts, and hopefully wear it with pride as they lead the army to battle on the table top.

So, for the winner, not only the shirt, but I am throwing in a box of 10 Tactical Marines, a set of custom resin shoulder pads, and a set of matching bases from Secret Weapon Miniatures,

and with the paint set donated by X Planet Games,

the winner will be able to build up and paint this last squad to match all the other donated models, and cap off this awesome army prize.

You can see all the finished models and other extra goodies at the Storm Wardens Prize Page.

Are you ready to win this and join the Build Team?

Storm Wardens Bikers

My last models for the Storm Wardens Army Project, these bikes are ready to go.

I decided these could be used as tank hunters with melta spam and zooming around for the extra save.

Sargent with power sword and melta bomb, bustin a one handed wheelie.

Melta gunner

Attack bike with multi melta, kinda looks like it's falling off the base, but I really wanted to have it on one to match everyone else.

Good ole ablative wound biker trooper.

These guys are going up on the Storm Wardens Prize Blog, check it out to see all the models and other prizes that are up for grabs for that one lucky winner on July 25th.

Also don't forget, the last day to hit the link and get your donation in to be counted is this Sunday July 18th at 7pm PST, after that we will close the links down and start counting beans and gearing up for the big give away.

John
