Belated Happy Easter!

Once in a while the White Dwarf will write about talented painters that give their sweethearts a cool model for a birthday. Not being one of those people, I still dared to give my wife a model for Easter and I hadn't time to photograph it. So here it is: a pivotal moment in the Lord Of the Rings.
My wife loves the books and the movie (she had never seen any of the models from GW) and I had these models laying around.
She really liked it, although it must have seemed like a geeky gift. It now has a little place in the living room.

Kitbash Khorne Lord on Juggernaut

I have had this Juggernaut kicking around for a while, I had tried to mount and based it in a dynamic leaned way over position, and had planned on parting together a rider for it, but it just sat around.

I was digging around in my bits and spotted a few parts that got the juices flowing, so I went for it and started pinning some parts together to get the rider pose to look right, and since he is a Lord, I dug ups some bits to make him stand out a bit.

The cape is an empire fantasy item and the axe is from the new Minotaurs with a bit of green stuff to make it demonicy, chains are from the Marauder horses.

Threw down some paint, and it ended up looking like this.

I like the model, but I am unhappy with the way the power effect turned out, I think a red or yellow glow would look better and imply the demon weapon thing better, I will have to redo it, any suggestions?

The Bishkek 2nd Penal Squad, part 3: the boys are done

Before getting into these bad boys, I want to remind all of you of our Super Chain Blog Give Away, which John started yesterday. Please join, click on the link in the right column and check out the details. We have amazing prizes for the winner!
Now onto the ultimate sinners in the service of the emperor. I finished them up a month ago, but they had to move to my local game store Game Alot in Santa Cruz for a painting competition. Yesterday was gamesday there, unfortunately I couldn't be there, i was still on vacation. Anyway, today I went over and found out this squad made first place in the squad category! It's the first time I ever won something, so I am super happy. Anyway, enough talking, here's the squad

I did my best on the tattoos...
gave all of them a slightly different skintone, as they could all come from different planets

John made the one on the right out of zombie parts
The next one looks creepy, I guess there always has to be a crazy one in each story
and here is the Boss, Col Schaeffer:
In the end I experimented with the lighting a little and came up with this interesting mood shot. It hightlights a different feeling in the model.
Here is the post that explains how I kitbashed these guys.
The bases are all Dragon Forge Trench bases. Wouldn't it be nice to get some of those for a Give Away? I waiting for a message from Jeff.

PS
Besides the Penal Squad, Autolochus, the dreadnought from the Iron Snakes also won first in the same competition in the large model category. Here's that model

All in all a great way to come back home!

Nurgle Death Guard Biker Test Model

Toughness 6, big move and shoot and an extra CC attack?

OK

I put these guys off as they are not too fluffy for Death Guard, and I do not like the Chaos bikes.

I started with a brand new Marine bike, ( should have used a built and beat up one ) filed away flash lines and drilled barrels and pipes and went to work on it with a Dremel tool, then went over that with brushed on liquid plastic glue.

Forgeworld Death Guard torso and shoulder pads, Kroot bag, guard bedroll, skeleton skull, greenstuff Rot.

and painted

How many should I make?

Community Building Through the Barter Bucket

Have you ever played the game Dominion? I have, it's a lot of fun, but when I first saw the components and started reading the rules I just shook my head. I thought there'd be no way I'd get the hang of it. Surprisingly you not only get the hang of it by turn two of your very first game, it keeps building momentum and gets better and better every time you play it.

I think of our Barter Bucket in the same way. You may see it and think, "Sheesh, mailing bits, asking for bits, sending whole figs, it all sounds pretty involved." Once you do it though, the beauty of it starts to unveil, and every time after that it keeps building momentum and keeps getting better and better.

Personally I'm building a Deathwatch squad to use for an RPG. Those little DW shoulder pads are hard to come by, if I buy them on eBay, I'm looking at $5 bucks a pop after shipping. Popular bits selling places put them at $3 bucks each. That's $30 bucks, minimum, to outfit ten troops with just shoulder pads! Through my dealings with the Bucket however, many individuals have sent me their extras; DW shoulder pads they weren't using or didn't need. One person sent me just a single pad, it was the only one they had and postage was less than forty cents. It all adds up and it all helps, no matter how small.

I don't know these people other than that they're fellow gamers who share the same hobby that I do. If we lived in the same zip code I'm sure we'd be rolling dice together at the game table. As it is, we're still building a larger gaming network. Someone sent me a bunch of Bolter scopes and a slew of Space Wolf heads, I didn't have anything they were looking for at the time, but I'll be watching their needs in the future closely and see how I can help.

And that's where the door swings both ways. The Bucket is not about just sitting back and getting free stuff for nothing. You get out of it what you put into it and I've sent pieces all over the place, including overseas. A pair of IG autocannons I had laying around went to the UK, I didn't need them, and someone else is now getting good use out of them. Same thing with some Terminator thunder hammers that I sent off to the west coast, my Terminator Assault squad was already built, what did I need the extras for? Now someone is building a squad with their son for the first time and putting them to use. Someone posted they needed Goblin Fanatics. I don't really do WHFB, so I didn't think much of it at the time, but one day I was digging in a bits box for Apothecary parts and what did I find? An old, battered Blood Bowl Fanatic, half painted and lying forgotten at the bottom of a parts pile. I can guarantee he would never see the light of day in my possession, but now that's going to change and all I had to do was take five minutes out of my day and drop it in the mail.

Like the game Dominion, what looks complicated at first shows itself to be anything but. As you progress along, using the Barter Bucket becomes more than just mailing off bits, you realize you're networking with other gamers and in helping one another out, you're building that community. Who knows, maybe you'll see someone you've traded with at a big convention down the road, sit down for a chat and a cold beverage, they won't be strangers.

A Bit of Family Old West Historical Fantasy in 28mm

Well Mike is on Vacation and I am back but dead sick, so I figure I will tell you a bit about a new project of mine.

I picked up the rules book for Gutshot, a wild west skirmish game, and have been buying some figures for it.

I decided I would try to go back into my family history to base my character off of, instead of just making one up.

This is Rollin Smith, in 1861. My Great Great Grandfather

I am lucky to have a book of his letters from the time he went west to California to the Gold Country from Vermont. He was very detailed in his writing and it makes for very interesting reading. He was the Orderly Sargent of the local militia and he bought a small store and delivered supplies and mail to the local mining camps and since he carried gold, he carried a brace of pistols.

With his partner and friend Jerome Fenton in Brandy City.

and the two together again in 28mm.

not the best match, but I am still looking for a taller model of Rollin, but this will do for now.

There was no Lawman in Camptonville, it was a small stage stop in a mining area, the closest sheriff was in Yuba city 40 miles away, so the citizens formed a Vigilance committee, the local men would take up arms and go after the crooks themselves. Rollin describes a day the stage was robbed just outside of town and they set out after the robbers, the men swearing the bandits would never make it to a courtroom and would find justice from judge lynch.

In all reality Rollin never did shoot anyone, most of what we hear of the Old West gunfights are a mix of fantasy and history, so I don't feel too bad for using him as a character for my Old West Fantasy games, and his writings give some great ideas for scenarios.

The new Blood Angels are a modeling marvel

I haven't played a game in 7 or 8 months now and it seems pretty unlikely that I will any time soon. The modeling part gives me so much more then the game, and being able to do a little bit every day right before going to bed, makes my day. And nothing made me more happy then the new BA models. I got the codex a week ago from a local store and have been marveling at it ever since. To me it's the best codex GW has produced in a long time. The new rules make the BA very, very strong, but I don't care about that part any way; the models are absolutely splendid. So splendid that I have decided to put together a little BA club, so I can model for another year on it or so. The Ork Fighta Bomma has just been traded for a bunch of cool BA models and I am looking forward modeling and painting some of the new and amazing models.
I doubt they will see the battle field any time soon, but I am convinced the journey is worth more then the destination. Here are some of my favorite BA models (sculpted by my favorite sculptor Juan Diaz):

And then there is Moriar the Chosen, the Death Company Dreadnought. I wonder, has there ever been a dedicated model made for him?

Don't worry too much about rules, just do some painting!
