Game Kastle Swap Meet

One of the sort of local game stores, and one of my favorites, the Game Kastle, had a Gamers swap meet, and I signed up for a table.

I loaded up the car with old minis and games and drove over to claim my table.

A great turnout of sellers and shoppers, with the sale lasting from 10 til 3, and great weather too. I saw lots of OOP warhammer stuff and other interesting minis.

I didn't do much shopping, but I did grab a couple of Necromunda minis for Mike and some Savage orks, a river troll, cowboys and German Tiger, Panther and Pak guns, all for next to nothing, and I sold a bunch of stuff I didn't need too.

It was great to meet lots of gamers from the area, and see what everyone was playing. I also gave out a few tubs of Super Secret Sand, and talked to a bunch of people about the blog.

I traded some stuff for some store credit, so after I packed up, I had a look around to spend my gift card. I grabbed an Albatross, a big box of plastic cacti and a pack of mounted /dismounted cowboys.

Good times were had by all and I am looking forward to the next Swap.

The Bishkek 2nd Penal Squad, part 2

My second post on the Penal Squad was going to be about finishing the paintjob on these bad boys, but I decided to enter them in a local painting competition, so they are sitting in a glass case in the store called Game Alot in Santa Cruz, waiting for a new chance to serve the emperor.
More detailed images after this is done, which will be after April 17th.

In the meantime, just for fun, I decided to give them a ride....
That's right, these guys get their own, customized ride with extra fortified rebar.
For the floor I used plastic card with metal design, and for the rest I just kind of slapped it together. The vehicle itself came from a trade on the barter bucket a while back.
The little power cables feed the lasers that sense movement above the roofline. If one of them tries to escape, the laser shoots out a painfully hot beam that will teach the victim not to try that again. The only way out is the back AND only when the handler says it's time.
I don't really know if the Penal Squads are allowed a vehicle, doesn't really say in the codex, but I would have built it anyway. Does anyone know for sure what the rules are for this unit with transports?

Hope this inspires!

Barter Bucket: Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Welcome to the Santa Cruz Warhammer Barter Bucket v2.0! The bucket's been a great success so far, but we need your help to keep spreading the word on your own blogs, the details are here, and for an excellent tutorial to barter bucketing, check this guide out!

I'm your host, Mik, of Mik's Minis. The bucket is for all of us; gamers helping out other gamers, bits trading here and there, specific parts, and the like. I'm very excited it has found a place to call home here at Santa Cruz Warhammer, these guys have been great.

The ground rules are pretty simple. You send me an email of what you are looking for, need, or just looking to get rid of to "miksminis@gmail.com", make sure it's in list form with plenty of detail. The more detail the better, if you're getting rid of Orks, tell me what kind, how many, etc. I will then post the requests here weekly each Saturday morning at Santa Cruz Warhammer. Please have your emails to me by no later than the Thursday of that week so I have enough time to compile everything, get it edited and formatted in time for the Saturday post.

If you see an item below you are interested in, or can help someone else out, please contact the individual directly via their listed email address. Sometimes they're just looking for a single piece or two, you'd be surprised what all you can find at the bottom of your bits bin. Now, on to this week's bucket!

Help Decide My Fate, With Your Vote.

I hope this isn't too lame of a post, but I need some help.

I would like to enter a contest at the local game store, but I can only enter one model in each group, I have four models that would all be in the same group and must pick only one.

Like a proud father, I love them all the same, and have things about each that I like differently, but there can be only one.

I am asking you, my peers, to choose the model that you think I should enter, because I am having a hard time.

I am a bit unhappy with the contest classes which are;

"single figure" no larger than a Terminator,
"Squad" 5 or 10 man unit,

and the class I am having you vote on;

"Large Model" which is everything else, so vehicle, monster, riders, Dreds etc. Kind of a wide area.

Here are my choices, you can click the titles to jump to the blog posts.

Well, there you have it, which would you bring? Please vote on this page at the upper right, and let me know who will go, so I don't have to hurt their feelings.

Great OOP Miniatures Found for Pennies

As you may know, I am a bargain hunter and flea market hound.

I love buying my minis on Craigslist and have even found some great deals at the local city flea market at the old drive-in theater.

A couple of weeks ago I picked up a new box of crypt ghouls, and a box of skeletons for a dollar for both.

Last weekend I was digging around and found a sandwich baggy with these old minis in it for 50 cents each.

The top row are fantasy, and 40k on bottom. The bottom right three I took a special interest in, plastic Scout? Chainsaw warrior, and 2nd pattern Terminator.

So keep your eyes peeled for Craigslist adds and hit up the local flea markets ( unless you live near me ) , you never know what you might find.

Simple Tau Speed Painting

I decided to paint up my Tau with as simple and quick a paint job as I could stand, without being too embarrassing.

So here is my Tau speed painting technique.

I wanted to do a simple tan and black, with as few steps as I could get away with. I removed flash lines and based with sand.

1. Black primer

2. Yanden Darksun foundation paint on the armor. This is the most time consuming part but it gets faster with practice, and the foundation paint covers nice in a single coat.

3. Quick hard outline edge highlight with Skull white ( if you want a more muted highlight use bleached bone) and red dots for the helmet lenses.

4. Gryphonne Sepia wash

5. Second Gryphonne Sepia wash. Be sure that the first coat of wash is completely dry before you add the second coat.

The second wash really knocks down the edge highlight and adds some depth. All that's left is to paint the base, and I will add some unit marking details later.

I used the same technique on this Crisis Suit.

Here's a family photo with the bases finished.

I hope that this helps me paint up a good amount of Tau, with a few color changes you could use this to paint about any armor.

Kroot, and More Cars

I am still tuning my Kroot painting style, and I am enjoying working with them.

These 3 Karnivores are recycled from some poorly painted and assembled models that I bought second hand a while ago.

I was able to reposition the arms, and add some gear, and I am happy with the way they are coming out.

I also painted some new hounds, as I tend to do a few models at a time if the colors permit.

I used a 3 stage drybrush, and lots of washes.

As mentioned earlier, here at SCW, we distract ourselves at times away from the Warhammer universe at times, and are gearing up to play a game called Wreckage, and I have been busy building some cars.

I like to repaint some of the panels a different color to make it look like repairs have been done.

These models are quite fun, simple, cheap and a great distraction.

After reading Mik's post about his cowboy game, I think I may even give that a look.

A Quick Painting Update

While Mike is away in Holland I figured I will just give you a look at what I have been working on the past few days. I have been trying to get some painting done, and heres some of the progress.

This Commissar is a great sculpt and nice to paint.

My first painted Kroot.
A great model, but lots of gap filling.

I finally painted some Servitors
did them at the same time as the Commissar, many similar colors.

My in progress Dark Angel version of Telion, just a hooded head swap.
I painted him as a codex scout, but muted the cammo on the cloak with a heavy wash.

The Bishkek 2nd Penal Squad, part 1

Ever since the Imperial Guard codex came out, I have been inspired by that drawing of the penal squad soldier, looking underfed, poorly equipped and with a bleak future ahead. I love that drawing and have always wanted to emulate it in a squad. After John finished his penal squad, using gas masks and jump suits, I decided to give it a shot. Here's the squad that I built:
The leader is Col Schaeffer from the Last Chancers as a tribute to that awesome penal squad from back in the day. I have that set painted but am using it as normal troopers.
On to the troopers: the torsos and arms are from the Empire Flagellants (a great set!), the legs are Catachan, the guns and hands Cadian and the heads come from everywhere, as long as they had no hair. It's not easy finding ten different bald heads. The Flagellant set has a few excellent ones. John also dug up some good OOP ones.
Here are the troopers.
I green stuffed their vests a little longer to create a good transition between torso and legs.
I had to replace all the hands and fit Cadian ones which was hard and took a while.
I was going for an emaciated and aggressive look in their posture. These men have no choice but to fight. John built the right one below using Zombie head and legs, but I felt they were a little too thin. It does look very much like a Gulag type prisoner, but I wanted mine to look a little more able to survive at least in prison.
In earlier codexes the troopers wore explosive neckbands that would blow up once in a while to improve moral. I liked that idea and the Flagellant models actually have a neckband which looks perfect
the guy on the left is grabbing a grenade...
Here's the 1st painted one, a test.
A couple of thoughts about this guy:
-I went for really somber and bleak skintones
-grey and blue clothing: muted and probably been used for a very long time.
-tattoos on head, torso and arms
-trench base, which kind of symbolizes the tragedy of the war effort.
The base is from Dragon Forge

Mike
